Planning for Kernersville’s future is off to a fantastic start.
The comprehensive planning process kicked off with back-to-back days of engagement and visioning. On May 12, the planning team facilitated a Joint Meeting of the Board of Aldermen, Planning Board, and Comprehensive Plan Committee (view meeting presentation and notes here). On May 13, the wider community was invited to an open house to learn about the project and provide early input. All together, over 100 people participated across these meetings.
Residents and stakeholders from across Kernersville joined us at the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden to share initial ideas on Land Use and Housing, Economic Development, the Environment and Open Space, and Transportation. The contributions made and the discussions we had are important for helping bring the community’s vision to life with the Kernersville Comprehensive Plan.

What We Heard at the Open House
Click here for the complete recap of what we heard, or read key takeaways summarized below!
- Economic Development – Participants voiced strong support for: downtown restaurants, small businesses, entertainment, and research & development.
- Environment & Open Space – Residents prioritized: restored and preserved natural areas, native plantings and community gardens. People referred to the Kerner Mill Greenway as an excellent example of an enhanced natural area and expressed desire for more of such areas across the Town.
- Land Use & Housing – Participants ranked single-family detached housing, cottage courts, and downtown mixed-use as the top three options for future residential development. Residents were also interested in live/work options and clustered style housing. People noted a desire to maintain Kernersville’s small-town atmosphere, while also understanding that the Town needs to accommodate new growth.
- Transportation & Mobility – Many expressed a strong desire for enhanced pedestrian and bike infrastructure across Kernersville. Most people currently drive as their main form of transportation, but in the future, they would like options to walk and bike more. Residents described the need to provide additional roadway connections to reduce traffic congestion along Mountain Street and North/South Main Street and direct traffic to other areas of the Town. Participants shared a desire to explore public transit options, both local and regional, to enhance mobility options.
