Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, answered.

Review the questions below to learn more about the comprehensive plan’s purpose and process. This page may grow over the course of the project to reflect answers to questions that arise from community input.

What is a comprehensive plan?

A comprehensive plan is a roadmap for managing change and shaping the community’s next 10-15 years. It fuses findings from community outreach with data and local analysis to create a framework for proactive decision-making.

What topics will be covered in the comprehensive plan?

Planning topics will include: land use and zoning; community character and placemaking; economic development; transportation and infrastructure; and community facilities, programs, and services.

How will the plan be used?

The Adopted Plan will serve as a tool for Town decision makers. It often comes into play at budgeting times when deciding how to allocate Town resources, and with policy decisions that shape quality of life. Both the planning process and outcome (the document itself) initiate proactive discussions to avoid reactive debates if/when issues arise.

How will plan priorities be determined?

Priorities are shaped by findings from: (1) community engagement to understand shared goals, (2) analysis of data and community conditions, and (3) experience and expertise of the planning team. Local insight and input from residents, Town Boards & Commissions, organizations, and staff informs the big picture and guiding principles for the Comprehensive Plan.

Who is involved in the planning process?

First and foremost, the Kernersville community! This is your plan and we hope to have participation from as many residents, business owners, institutions, and organizations as possible. Town staff and a Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee (with representatives from the Town Board, Planning Board, and Board of Adjustment) are managing the process, with technical assistance from a consultant team of Teska Associates, Inc. and Freese & Nichols.
